Sacred Heart Update
May 20, 2011
Parents and Sacred Heart family,
Hard to believe we’re coming up on Memorial Day Weekend already! Having the opportunity to play baseball and softball is truly a freedom that we enjoy because of the heroic efforts of our military both today and through history, and we should not take that for granted. Memorial Day provides an opportunity to pause and reflect on that fact. If you see a service person, stop and thank them for the sacrifices they make and fly your flag proudly.
A few things to note as we move into the last stages of the regular season:
BOARD NOMINATIONS FOR NEXT YEAR – NOW BEING ACCEPTED
We are accepting nominations for the league’s board for the 2011-2012 season. Board terms are two years, and we have several board positions to fill through election. There's no better way for you to become involved in the league's activities than to serve on the Board, and we really do need your help now to be sure the league is well positioned for next year.
It's important that we have input from all groups in the league, from T-ballers on up, covering both baseball and softball. If you're interested in becoming a board member, please contact us now and we’ll be happy to discuss the possibility. Deadline for nominations (email us) is June 1. Elections will be held at the next General Membership Meeting.
GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING Our normal monthly general membership meeting will be held Tuesday, June 7, at 8:30 pm at the Westampton Municipal Building. Hope to see you there …this is our last meeting during the rec season, so come on out and share your thoughts on 2011.
TOURNAMENT TEAM: 7 YEAR OLD BASEBALL
Our league is going to have a 7 year old baseball tournament team, with tryouts to be held Saturday May 21 at 6 pm at the CYO Complex. The goal of this team is to give players an opportunity to play beyond the rec season and to continue developing their skills. The team will probably spend as much time practicing as they will spend playing games, as there are limited tournament opportunities at this age. Players and families that are interested should be willing to make a commitment to playing baseball several times a week, at a level that prepares them for play next season as 8 year olds.
RV HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL at TRENTON THUNDER this SUNDAY
Our local high school team, Rancocas Valley, is playing in the Burlington County tournament championship game this Sunday, at 4:30 pm following the Trenton Thunder game. It’s a great opportunity to see some former Sacred Heart players perform on the big stage of a minor league stadium. Discounted tickets to the Trenton Thunder game are available by calling Bobby Picardo 609-394-3300 extension 186. GO RED DEVILS!
PLAYOFFS: Great news, even with all of the rain we’ve had, all teams have qualified for the playoffs. Our regular season comes to an end next weekend, with league playoffs scheduled to begin right after Memorial Day for most divisions. The schedule is being developed and each team’s schedule will depend on how they finish up the regular season, but all teams should be ready to play! Full tournament brackets will be posted and updated at the league’s website, https://sacredheart.baberuthonline.com. The T-ball teams will be wrapping up their season on Saturday June 4 and will receive trophies in a fun ceremony immediately following their games.
BUG ALERT At this time of the season, the CYO Complex is prone to ticks, gypsy moth caterpillars, and mosquitoes (especially with the recent rain). We do our best to address the situation by dropping mosquito repellent tablets in wet areas, and using bug zappers near the wooded areas. Nonetheless, please be on the lookout for ticks and caterpillars when you and your children return home after an outing at our Complex over the next several weeks.
SUMMER CAMPS
If you are looking to keep your child playing ball and improving their skills, here are a few camps that are taking place over the summer:
- Sweeney Softball will be holding a camp at Sacred Heart July 5-7, covering all skills.
- Pro Skills Baseball Academy is hosting several camps locally, with a portion of camp fee going to Sacred Heart
- RVHS Head Baseball Coach Dave Hower and his Red Devils Staff will be conducting a fundamentals camp June 27-30 at Iron Works Park in Mount Holly.
More information for each of the camps can be found at the "Camps and Clinics" section of our league's website ....we'll add to this list as we get more information.
Hope you’ve noticed that the level of play has really picked up over the last few weeks, across all divisions. Looking back to the beginning of the season, take pride in how your son /daughter has improved their game over the course of the season while rolling up a host of smiles along the way. Now, let’s keep our fingers crossed for the rain clouds to pass along.
Play Ball!
